This Week in Sleet
The past week gets a big thumbs down in ratings. Across the board, outside and inside. Its snowing outside now except no, it is actually sleeting. It is sleeting outside and its sleeting inside. The sleet has become unbearable.
America is sleeting. America’s sleet is so slippery we’ve slipped into the part of the slope where the only way out is through. It’s us who will be the ones to affect any change at all in these hazardous, slippery conditions. It’s us anyway that have to try or else we’ll be no different than them. It’s how history will remember us.
I’ve been up since early this morning every morning. I have lost most of my routines, glued to processing how off the rails this all is. Yesterday even the rails went off the rails in all this sleet. The book that is writing itself is now outwitting itself. If I write about my grandmothers, then I am also writing what is happening right now. I am writing to our grandmothers and to our futures and to the memory of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and all who are out with their bodies on the line and suffering in detention camps, scared and abused thousands of miles from home… and this moment too when I, like you, would also rather be, need to be, doing anything but this, but this is all there is.
The Senate vote for a funding package that includes $10 billion for DHS and ICE is this Thursday, Jan 27th, this week. I made a script, below, if you need it—feel free to riff. Just please, let your senators know en masse that you will remember the way they vote Thursday when we vote in November.
Call 202-224-3121.
Ask to be connected to each of your two senators (two calls total).

Should say at the end “American citizens and human beings seeking asylum and American citizenship alike”).
SO awful right now. Thanks for your ‘action’ directions 😱👏 & thoughtful words!
