Hello
I’m Deborah Stein, and artist, writer and picture maker living between New York City and a small mountain village in Northern New Mexico. I show my artworks at LDBA in Santa Fe, and my writing and artworks have appeared in Khôra, Rowayat, The First Person, and here on Sometimes A Ghost. I’ve been teaching visual narrative and alternative art workshops about seeing and translating the world in images and words for adults and children for a fun long while. I take pleasure in water, color, words, and wonky painted things since studying with a family of toy painters in Northern India in her formative years.
In this space you’ll find words and images as part of the other’s story and which I suppose create the story itself. You’ll see the ways the things I encounter in the real and surreal world show up as big movers in my making life. I also like to sometimes discuss how these ideas enter into the classes I teach and the artists I support and encourage and strive to always inspire through my rogue art school, The StoryCamp Disco.
This space is here to explore my work, my writing and how I process the world and think about art, writing and the bridges I’m building between them.
Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox. A paid subscription is way for those with the means to show your appreciation for the labor that goes into creating and making a space like this with a few bonuses spread out throughout the year.
I appreciate all my readers no matter what and hope to keep the tiers accessible for all. If you are able to support my work here or take a workshop or residency with me, or buy a work of art from me, or find a way we can work together, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for being an artistic supporter.

As in my classrooms, I strive to create communities of like-hearted humans who share an interest in creative doing and confidence, visual narrative work, celebrating being an other in a sea of sameness and so on. I’m so glad you’re here.
